The following hymn was written for the kickoff of the Centennial of St. James the Great Catholic Church in Elkins Park, Pa. The hymn focuses on three key points in Scripture that would motivate St. James the Great:
Matthew 4:18-22 Call of the first disciples, namely fishermen James and John
Matthew 17:1-8 The Transfiguration
Matthew 28:16-20 The Commissioning of the Disciples
Other references:
"The way" - a common name for the movement around Jesus early in his ministry; also, "Camino de Santiago" or the "Way of St. James" is a pilgrimage route in Spain leading to the Cathedral of St. James the Great, who traditionally brought Christianity to Spain
"Daughters and Sons of Thunder" - St. James and his brother John were nicknamed the "Sons of Thunder"
The Cross - the Cross of Jesus; a cross with a pointed bottom and featuring a scallop is often called the "Cross of St. James". While once physical crosses were used as a weapon by a military order named for St. James, the image remains a decorative element on top of an almond cake found in the Galacian region of Spain
